Q: How did the kids' tests go and do you have the results yet?


A: Thanks for being worried about Mac's scrotum, Internet friends. It will mean a lot to Mac someday to know that so many people stayed up at night worrying about his fluid filled family jewels.

Mac's ultrasound was a cinch. Mac had a huge grin on his face the whole time. But I guess warm gel being spread all over your man parts would tend to be a positive experience for most boys. Our sweet Dr. S called us that night to tell us the only thing in there is fluid. No hernia. So we just continue to wait for deflation. It can't come soon enough.

Lois's CT scan was quite the experience. Our new ENT , Dr. R - who shall henceforth be known as the savior of Lois's hearing - suggested that Lois would need to be under anesthesia for the scan. But when the imaging center called to schedule the appointment, they said they would need to try it first with Lois awake. I had absolutely NO hope that Lois would be able to manage a CT scan while awake. But in typical Lois fashion, she surprised us. They strapped her to the board in a full body bind of Velcro and blankets - and her head was cradled in a metal contraption. Literally - all you could see of Lois was her facial features. And initially, it wasn't pretty. She was scared, yet you could tell she was also intrigued with the machinery. Jay stood on one side and I stood on the other, and we both sang to her at the top of our lungs while the big doughnut rotated around her. By the end, she was totally calm and grinning at her slightly manic parents. Why we didn't take the 5 seconds required to snap a picture of this event is beyond me.

To avoid the radiation, Mac was hanging out in the hallway with a nurse who must have been a flower child in the 1960's. She was very sweet but had obviously fried a few brain cells. She asked me if Lois and Mac were twins. 'Nuff said.

We came home with a disc containing the results of Lois's CT scan which Jay promptly loaded onto his computer. So now we have hundreds of pictures of slices of Lois's skull. I'm sure they will come in handy someday. (??)

We see Dr. R - our savior - tomorrow. He'll check out the CT scan and hopefully give us his opinion on the efficacy of another myringotomy attempt - or if the physiology of Lois's ears is such that tube surgery is pointless. He's strongly in favor of some amplification for Lois, so I hope we will find out more about bone conduction hearing aids for our girl.
